Protea Cynaroides – The King Protea

Known as the King Protea and celebrated as South Africa’s national flower, Protea cynaroides is the true species. It produces the largest heads in the genus—sometimes up to 30 cm—in shades from cream to deep red. Each plant can look a little different, which adds to its natural charm and diversity.

Protea Cynaroides Season: May – December

Protea Clare – Soft Elegance

A modern cultivar bred for the cut-flower market, Protea ‘Clare’ produces large, blush-pink flower heads with creamy centres on strong, straight stems. Its long vase life and uniform appearance make it a firm favourite for export and for weddings or events where a romantic look is desired.

Protea Clare Season: August – November

Protea Madiba – Rich Red Elegance

Named in honour of Nelson Mandela, Protea ‘Madiba’ is a smaller, crimson cultivar of the King Protea. With its velvety red petals and shorter stems, it’s ideal for mixed bouquets and markets looking for the “King Protea look” in a more compact size.
